The Arizona Coyotes begin a new phase in their history on Thursday night when they open the season at PPG Paints Arena against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins have reached the playoffs for 16 straight seasons, winning three Stanley Cups along the way, but haven’t won a series since 2018. Last spring, Pittsburgh coughed up a 3-1 series lead and fell to the New York Rangers in the first round. As for Arizona, the club faced eviction from Gila River Arena in suburban Glendale last season and the city declined to renew the team’s lease. As a result, the Coyotes will play this season at the 5,000-seat Mullett Arena at Arizona State University.
