Grant Wells and Virginia Tech will take the field against Hayden Wolff and Old Dominion on Friday.

The first week of college football will feature a game between the Viriginia Tech Hokies and the Old Dominion Monarchs. The Hokies finished last season 6-7 while going 4-4 inside conference play. Braxton Burmeister led the team at quarterback last year, but Marshall transfer Grant Wells will play that part this season. Last season with the Herd, Wells threw for 295 completions with 3,535 yards and 16 touchdowns with 13 interceptions. The team also lost Raheem Blackshear, its leading rusher. The next man up would be Malachi Thomas, a sophomore. As a freshman, Thomas ran 93 times for 440 yards and three touchdowns.

The Monarchs also finished last season with a losing record at 6-7 as well. However, they did finish 5-3 in Conference USA play. Old Dominion is also bringing back the team’s two outstanding offensive stars.

Hayden Wolff ended with 159 completions for 1,933 yards and 10 touchdowns while running back Black Watson took off for 1,112 yards and eight touchdowns with a receiving touchdown as well.
