Penn State (4-0) squandered nearly all of a 21-point lead on Thursday before holding on to advance to the semifinals of the Shriners Hospitals Charleston Classic at TD Arena in Charleston, South Carolina. The Nittany Lions will take on Virginia Tech (4-0), which led its game by 20 points late in the first half before also staving off a late comeback.  The win pushed Micah Shrewsberry’s record as Penn State’s head coach over the .500 mark at 18-17. The Lions last reached the postseason when they won the 2018 NIT. Mike Young, in his fourth year with the Hokies, is 58-36 and seeking a third straight NCAA tournament bid.

In the tournament opener on Thursday, Penn State’s lead over Furman had been cut to one before Seth Lundy hit a jumper with 1:22 remaining and the Nittany Lions held on for a 73-68 victory. Lundy scored 20 points while Jalen Pickett also dropped 20 to go with seven assists.

Hunter Cattoor’s two free throws with five seconds left sealed Virginia Tech’s 75-71 victory over Old Dominion in the second quarterfinal of the event. Sean Pedulla finished with 18 points and seven assists for the Hokies while Justyn Mutts scored 11 points to go with nine rebounds.

Virginia Tech is 6-4 all-time against Penn State, but the Nittany Lions have won the last three meetings. The most recent was a 75-55 win at Blacksburg on Dec. 8, 2020.
