The Pittsburgh Steelers wrap up their preseason with a Saturday contest in Detroit against the Lions while coach Mike Tomlin looks to make his final decision at quarterback.
The Steelers will play veteran Russell Wilson and perhaps Justin Fields on one more occasion as their preseason battle for the starting quarterback job takes on more excitement than many anticipated. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh looks to make final tune-ups and personnel decision elsewhere with a Week 1 date looming in Atlanta against the Falcons on Sunday, Sept. 8. Coming off a 10-7 season and an early ouster from the AFC Playoffs, the Steelers play their first two games of the ’24 season on the road against Atlanta and in Week 2 against the Denver Broncos.
The Lions were darlings of the 2023 season as they advanced past the Wild Card round of the NFC Playoffs for the first time since 1991 and won two postseason games in front of their home fans. Detroit has the pieces around quarterback Jared Goff to compete for an NFC title again with a stout offensive line, quality skill players and former first-round picks contributing at a number of positions. Detroit was 12-5 last season and defeated the Los Angeles Rams (24-23) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (31-23) in the playoffs before falling to the San Francisco 49ers (34-31) in the NFC Championship.
