Justin Herbert

Los Angeles Chargers fans are going to get an early glimpse at what the team hopes will be its franchise quarterback when Justin Herbert takes the field on Sunday.

Herbert was expected to backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor this season, but due to an unusual injury to Taylor, the former Oregon Duck has been thrust into the starting role for the team’s matchup against Carolina.

The Panthers, meanwhile, will be hoping the defense can step up for the first time this season as the team has lost its first two games of the season, having allowed 65 points between the first two games.

Herbert had been, for a while, considered one of the best NFL Draft prospects in the 2019 class. However, after a lackluster season, his stock fell and he opted to return for another year at Oregon. He shined in 2019 and was rewarded by becoming the sixth overall pick to Los Angeles.

In his final year at Oregon, he led the Ducks to a 12-2 season and a Rose Bowl victory — where he was named the Offensive MVP. He finished the season with 3,471 passing yards, 32 touchdowns, five interceptions and a completion percentage of 66.8%.

And in his first appearance, filling in for Taylor against the Chiefs, he looked solid, completing 22 of 33 passes for 311 yards with a touchdown and interception.

The Panthers will certainly hope to give him a ruder awakening to the NFL. Carolina has continued to find success offensively behind franchise back Christian McCaffrey, but the defense allowed 34 points to Derek Carr and the Las Vegas Raiders and another 31 to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has struggled to get it going under center, having completed just one touchdown pass with two interceptions and 636 passing yards.
