THE GAME: Michigan vs. Michigan State scouting report, predictions

SPARTANS: Named after ‘Sweetness,’ QB Payton Thorne was born for big moments

Game notes: Michigan was a 24½-point favorite last year in Ann Arbor. MSU won that game, 27-24, for coach Mel Tucker’s first win. Now, they’ll play in East Lansing for the first time since 2018. … There is a lot of history being made this week: There has never been a 7-0 vs. 7-0 matchup between these schools. The last time both were unbeaten entering the game was 2010 (both 5-0). The last time both were ranked in the top 10 for the game was 1964. … Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh is 2-0 on the road in this rivalry, 3-3 overall. Now in Year 7 and with everything on the line, Harbaugh faces the most pressure of anyone in this game. And this game has big-time College Football Playoff implications. … Michigan leads the all-time series — first played in 1898 — 71-37-5, but MSU has won 9 of 13 and currently holds the four-foot Paul Bunyan Trophy.
