Women’s Basketball Drops Season Opener with Drake

Five Bluejays made collegiate debut

Omaha, Neb. — In Creighton’s first sporting event of any kind since March 12th, the Bluejay women’s basketball team dropped its season-opener to Drake by a 75-62 score on Wednesday, Nov. 25th.

Temi Carda led Creighton with 18 points and eight rebounds, while freshman Emma Ronsiek recorded 13 points and six rebounds in her collegiate debut.

Creighton (0-1) trailed 29-17 after one quarter against a hot-shooting Drake (1-0) team that shot 75 percent from the field in the opening 10 minutes. The Bulldogs made 12-of-16 field goal attempts, including 4-of-5 three-pointers, and owned a 10-3 lead on the glass. Chloe Dworak had a pair of three-pointers to lead Creighton with six points in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs opened the second quarter with a 9-0 run, only to have CU answer with a 9-0 run of its own thanks to six points by Carda and a three-ball from Ronsiek. Drake’s lead reached 50-33 at the intermission behind 16 points from Missouri transfer Grace Berg, while Creighton was led by a dozen points by Carda in the initial half.

A 10-2 run helped the Bluejays close within 57-46 late in the third quarter before Drake countered with a 10-2 run to take a 66-48 advantage into the final period.

Creighton drew within 13 points on three occasions in the fourth quarter, but got no closer.

Creighton had five players make their collegiate debuts, as Ronsiek and fellow freshmen Molly MogensenMorgan MalyMallory Brake and Jayme Horan combined for 20 points and 10 rebounds in 60 minutes.

Drake was paced by a career-high 24 points from Berg, who averaged 3.8 points per game at Missouri in 2018-19. Monica Burich contributed a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Creighton returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 28 with a 2 p.m. game at Northern Iowa.
