The Northwestern Wildcats host the Wisconsin Badgers Saturday in Week 12 Big Ten college football action from Ryan Field in Evanston.
Wisconsin enters this one at 2-0 on the 2020 college football season. The Badgers have dispatched both Illinois and Michigan by wide margins so far. As for Northwestern, they’re rolling at 4-0 this year. The Wildcats have logged wins over Maryland, Iowa, Nebraska and Purdue in succession. Wisconsin has looked very impressive across their first two games. First up was Illinois, and Wisconsin jumped out to a 28-7 halftime lead there on the way to a big 45-7 win. Game two against Michigan was more of the same thing. The Badgers were up 28-0 at the half, scoring in every quarter during a 49-11 beatdown victory.
In the big win over the Wolverines, Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz posted 127 yards with two touchdowns, and Jalen Berger led the rush with 87 yards and a score on 15 carries. Tops in receiving for the Badgers was Jake Ferguson with four catches for 51 yards and a TD.
Over on the Northwestern side, they’ve had some much closer games over their first quartet, but the undefeated results have been the same. The Wildcats beat up Maryland 43-3 in the opener, then escaped Iowa 21-20 and Nebraska 21-13. Last weekend’s Purdue game was another close one 27-20, but a nice win all the same.
In the victory over Purdue, Northwestern quarterback Peyton Ramsey put up 212 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Isaiah Bowser rushed 13 times for 27 yards, and Rammed Chiaokhiao-Bowman posted 86 yards and three scores on eight catches.
The Badgers are 4-0 ATS in their last four conference games and 4-1 ATS in their last five games overall. Wisconsin is 4-1 ATS in their last five after a straight-up win and 17-7 ATS in their last 24 road games.
Meanwhile, the Wildcats are 4-0-1 ATS in their last five games overall and 4-0-1 ATS in their last five conference games. Northwestern is 2-5 ATS in their last seven in November and 3-8 ATS in their last 11 on grass.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Wisconsin here, and this should be one of the better matchups of the college football weekend. Northwestern has gotten off to a great start, but in all likelihood this will be their toughest test of the year. The Wildcats have won by eight points or fewer in each of their last three, and with the beatdowns the Badgers have displayed so far across their first pair, I don’t see Northwestern keeping up for the entire game here. Should still be a great one to watch, but I ultimately like the Badgers on the cover.
