No. 11 Tennessee (1-0) opened its season with a blowout victory on Monday night and on Sunday heads to Nashville to host Colorado (1-1) at Bridgestone Arena. The Buffaloes stumbled in a warmup on Friday night heading into an early-season matchup against a ranked Power 5 opponent. Tad Boyle enters his 12th season at Colorado, where he is 255-156 and has taken the Buffaloes to five NCAA tournaments, most recently in 2021. Colorado was an NIT team last year, losing in the first round. Veteran coach Rick Barnes is in his seventh year at the helm of the Volunteers and is 151-81 with four straight NCAA bids. Tennessee lost in the second round last year and was 27-8.

After opening with a win over UC Riverside at home, Colorado turned the ball over 19 times Friday night en route to an 83-74 loss at Grambling State. The Buffs shot only 40.3% and gave up 20 points off turnovers. KJ Simpson scored 16 points for Colorado while Nique Clifford added 15 points. Kalen Gavvison had 11 points and four steals.
Tennessee got cooking in the second half on Monday at Thompson-Boling Arena, routing Tennessee Tech 75-43. The Vols were 10-of-23 from behind the arc after intermission, created 28 points off 22 Golden Eagle turnovers and held their opponents to 32.5% shooting. Tyreke Key came off the bench for 17 points and had three of Tennessee’s 17 steals.
The Volunteers are 4-0 all-time against Colorado, winning in Boulder on Dec. 4 69-54.
